First Tooth!

Saturday morning I took the early morning shift, since RCW does it Monday through Friday.  After C's bottle, I was rubbing his gums as I often do because he's been teething like crazy these past few weeks.  But when I rubbed his gums this morning, something poked me!

Yup, little man's first tooth!

I looked and saw something teeny tiny and white, but definitely felt the sharpness.  When RCW got up, I made him check it out.  And he confirmed I wasn't imagining things, he felt it and saw it too.

It has finally poked through little by little this week and I snapped a picture this afternoon to send the grandparents.  Its his bottom right and I'm so excited!  With all his chewing and shaking his head and scratching his cheeks, I was wondering when oh when this elusive first tooth would make its appearance.  And here it is!  Yay!

This was pre-Mommy's attack on his mouth.  Happy baby :)

Do you see it? Just that little bit of white poking through.  But oh so exciting.

And honestly, for starters I have to say I'm pretty impressed with myself that I was able to wrangle a 6 month old, open his mouth, pull down his bottom lip, push back his tongue AND snap a picture of the tooth all by myself.  Good job to me!

But the real deal.  C has been a champ.  I'm giving full credit to the amber teething necklace.  He's still sleeping from 8pm to 5am, his usual schedule, give or take 30 minutes.  He's still going down on his own without any fussing.  He hasn't had a drop of Infant Advil since the first week of July before we got the necklace.  And he hasn't had any Orajel or teething tablets.  Maybe we just have a great teether?!  Or maybe the necklace is the magic so many mommas say it is.  Whatever is making my little man pop sharp pointy teeth through his gums without being a sleepless, grumpy, in pain monster, I'm over the moon about it.  I hope we continue to be so lucky with all his other teeth!

Baby Led Weaning - Take 1

Baby led weaning.

Oh how we'd been anxiously awaiting our little man to officially turn 6 months so we could start giving him food.  I had toyed with the idea of starting him at 4 months with purees.  I was going to make all of his own baby food, ya know.  The mixing and spooning into trays and freezing.  I was ready and excited to start.

But then I started reading and seeing more about Baby Led Weaning (BLW).  And it sounded intriguing and right and for me made more sense.  Wasn't the point for C to learn to eat on his own and give him real food?  Wouldn't it be easier if he were just eating what we were eating?  No mixing, spooning and freezing.  And no spoon feeding C!

We bought the book and cookbook and read through them.  We understood and both felt good about the decision to try this method.  So we waited.  And seemed to wait, wait and wait some more for C to finally be the magic 6 months.  Not that we didn't offer.  We started sitting him in his high chair, sitting him our laps and having food right in front of his face.  He didn't care.  He wasn't interested.  So we waited.

Saturday morning we decided to dive in.  We were all up, C had had his 8am bottle and we did it.  We gave him pieces of dry toast and banana.  With my camera ready and RCW on standby in case of choking we dove in head first to BLW.  C did great!  He seemed to really like his toast, but the banana just kept mashing up in his hands.  I won't lie, we did have some gagging and some spitting up.  It was a bit scary, but we let C work through it on his own so he will learn.  It didn't deter him, he kept going.  We just gave him a sippy cup of water since the toast, which he adored, was so dry.

Our game plan was to try to feed him breakfast and dinner on the weekends and dinner during the week to start with.  Since he isn't really eating, he's just playing, discovering and exploring, it isn't necessary for him to have 3 meals a day and sometimes he can miss it altogether, like last night when dinner didn't fit into our schedule until after he was in bed.

But on the nights he's enjoying dinner with us, he's been trying out steamed baby carrots, steamed broccoli florets and pieces of baked turkey.  What does he love?  The turkey.  What does he not care for?  The broccoli.

But he kept trying it and making these horrible faces, which made RCW and I crack up!  We've had a good first few days, he's trying.  He's at least picking up the food and putting it in his mouth.  But he definitely isn't really eating anything yet.  I've read it can take a couple weeks for any eating to actually happen.  We're fine with going slow and steady.  And honestly, this method seems to be easier than homemade baby food.  And spoon feeding too.  We fix all of our dinners, sit at the table and we all eat together.  While I snap way too many pictures of C!

Someone commented on Fb that it was the happiest day of C's life.  I don't know about him, but I'm pretty sure its the happiest days of the dogs' lives!   They are loving all the food that is being dropped on the floor for them to clean up!

Anyone else who does BLW have any tips or tricks?  Did you little one gag or choke?  When will C actually start eating the food, or do we have a while for that to happen?

Who does C look like? 6 Month Edition

Its time again for another edition of 'Who does C look like?'

Here's the recap:

Newborn - C looks almost identical to RCW.
S-C-R - Newborn
3 Months - The votes were mixed, but most came back that he was starting to resemble me.
S-C-R - 3 Months
 And now at 6 Months.

S-C-R - 6 Months
What do you think?

My personal opinion for this time and strictly from looking at these pictures, he has RCW's features with more of my coloring.  I stared and analyzed these 3 pictures and I feel like looking at just these, C has RCW's nose, eye shape, mouth and hair line.  But he's pale, blue eyed and brown haired like me.  Maybe its just that C and RCW's poses are so similar for 6 months, but I really don't see a big resemblance between my little man and me like I did back at 3 months.  However, in everyday life I still don't see RCW when I look at C, but the likeness is a bit uncanny judging just from these pictures.

So, do you agree with me or do you see some of me in C at 6 months?

And sadly, unless I can rummage up some pictures from VA, there won't be a 9 month installment.  Right now, my photo archives for RCW and me skip from these at 6 months to our first birthdays!

Little Man - 6 Month Update

Weight/Height: C's 6 month checkup and shots aren't scheduled until August 24, so this month we went with the at home methods to determine weight and height!  He clocked in at 19.2 pounds and measured out to be 26.0 inches.  With these measurements he's ranking at 71st percentile for weight and 23rd percentile for length.  I'll update after his checkup next Friday and see how accurate we were!

Eating:
This month was fabulous and stable.  Imagine that!  The first month of his life that we know what he's eating and when without hardly any debate or changes.  Yay!  For the most part his schedule has been: 5 ounces of Similac Alimentum and 1 tablespoon of Plum Organics Oatmeal with 2mL of Zantac at 5am and 5pm and 6 ounces of Similac Alimentum and 1 tablespoon of Plum Organics Oatmeal at 8am, 11am, 2pm and 8pm.  He's getting a total of 34 ounces of Alimentum formula per day with 6 tablespoons of oatmeal per day.  Some days he isn't taking as much, but still sleeping on schedule so we let it be!  This month C also learned to hold his own bottle.  We still hold him, but he holds the bottle.  He is so funny with it!  As soon as he sees it, he starts reaching for it, grabs it and puts it straight into his mouth.  And when we stop to burp him, he stares at the bottle and screams.  He enjoys his food as much as we enjoyed the consistency of month 6! But we are excited about adding some solids into C's diet with baby led weaning this month. We'd been waiting for him to hit the 6 month marker and it's finally here.  We shall see how this goes...

Sleeping:  With all the changes that took place in the middle of C's fifth month, he has continued to amaze up with his flexibility into month six!  He handled the bed time change, out of swaddle, out of Nap Nanny, out of mom and dad's room with such ease.  Such a little champ!  Not much happened on the sleeping front during month six, besides he started sleeping MORE!  You read that right.  He has started to take longer naps at school and its a given that he is going to sleep at least four hours during the day.  The times are all over the place, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon and sometimes both, but he needs a good 4 hours of daytime naps.  Then he's sleeping between 8.5 to 9 hours at night from 8pm to 5am.  We still have our off nights here and there, but for the most part little man is being a sleeping rockstar.  And, again, his mom and dad are super grateful and enjoying it as much as we can!  And I should say, we are still rocking him for sleep.  I just can't stop. While he will fall asleep on his own in his crib, I just love cuddling him too much to stop it just yet.  During weekend naps, I can see his sleepy signs and we help him calm down and drift off.  He's started 'talking' himself to sleep this past month too and its just too cute!  One day, he won't want us to rock him so we're loving it while we can!  For month six he averaged 12.95 hours a day!

Diapers: We're still loving the cloth and he is wearing FuzziBunz with 2 inserts exclusively during the day.  We did find this month we needed to increase the length of the dipes so we changed the leg setting to a 3 on each end, but his waist is still set at 2 on both sides.  At night, when he is going 8+ hours in 1 diaper he wears a BumGenius 4.0 with 2 microfiber inserts plus a small hemp, however he has leaked through a couple times so we need to look into adding some extra absorbancy to those nighttime dipes!  He is averaging about 6.5 cloth dipes a day total with an average of 2 poops a day.  The only negative of our diapers is the rash.  He cleared up at his 5 month birthday on July 15 and stayed clear for a good week.  But then, with 1 nasty poo, the rash came back with a vengeance.  And while it clears up, it hasn't truly left our poor boy's bum.  We did switch to A+D cream for him at school and at home we only use the perscribed Magic Butt Cream.  So we're using our fleece liners, which means double the washing efforts each week, but in the grand scheme it isn't that bad.  And I still perfer more washing than using disposables on C.  The rash still isn't painful for him so we're just riding it out until we visit his new pediatrician next week for his 6 month checkup.

Clothes: C can no longer fit in any of his 3 month outfits and they were all packed away this weekend.  And, his 6 month ones are getting a little tight around his fluffy bum too!  We're hoping he can squeeze the last of these hot summer days out in them, but we shall see.  His Grandma B. bought him some 9 month summer rompers that we can break into if need be!  The poor boy though, he has about 3 pairs of pjs that get recycled because the 9 month Carter's that we have are way too big and we don't want to buy more 6 months knowing he's going to soon be out of them!

Social Butterfly: Poor C didn't get out and about too much during this month.  Thanks for his dad's work schedule of nights and weekends and his mom's busy school routine, we had a lot of time playing together at home.  He had the occasional grocery or Target trip and even went to Sam's Club with daddy alone one afternoon where he got to ride in the cart like a big boy because dad took the car without his bucket carseat!  C's social butterfly for his 6th month was family time with us and the pups for the most part.  He did say goodbye to his cousin Vivi and visit with his Great Aunt and Uncle while we helped pack and move my cousin out of Louisville and back home to Virginia and C had his 6 month photo shoot too where he adored our photographer's husband who came along as her assistant.

Playtime:  With all the family time at home this month, our boy has learned a lot!  He is officially sitting on his own!!  While I wouldn't leave him on the hardwood floor without supervision for fear of him bumping his head too hard, I will leave him sitting in the middle of the bed, his crib and the carpeted floor.  He loves sitting and playing with his toys - Mortimer the Moose, Sophie the Giraffe and his latest loves, little crinkly books.  Also this month our big man FINALLY rolled from belly to back!  And of course, it happened while neither RCW nor I were watching.  RCW put him on his belly on his playmat, we were putting things away in the hall closet and when we turned around, C was on his back!  WHAT?!  We immediately ran over, flipped him back to his belly and RCW ran to get the camera.  C rolled again.  RCW missed it.  We spent all weekend trying to get C to roll so RCW could witness it and get it on camera - finally Sunday night C cooperated!  He isn't rolling from back to belly so he isn't really mobile, but he is lunging for toys now that he's sitting up and will scoot around.  We often put him to bed and wake up in the morning to find him sideways in his crib!  This month we also starting putting him in a highchair, it is actually a travelseat that attaches to our kitchen table.  He loves to sit there and play with his toys while I'm working in the kitchen or we're eating.  We decided as we prepare for Baby Led Weaning to get him acclimated to sitting at the table with us and he seems to really enjoy it!  He has been so much fun this month with everything he is learning and doing, but I will say he still enjoys being snuggled and I'm relishing every moment he lets me just hold him!  He often sits in our laps and plays and seems to just want to be with us sometimes.  And I'm perfectly fine with holding off on chores to cater to my little man!

Personality: He has definitely had a happy summer.  Lots of smiles and giggles.  He loves being tickled on his belly, when you get his neck and when I 'eat' his hands and feet.  Hearing him laugh is the best sound in the whole world!  We video it often because I don't want to ever forget these moments with C!  He is still talking all the time.  This month we got a lot of ba-ba-ba.  He says it all the time, but I wonder if he's talking about his bottle.  We have been using the baby sign for bottle and saying the word to him with the bottle in hand for the past 2 months.  And we are excited to begin teaching him more signs, especially as he begins to eat solids with us at the dinner table!  C is also a big fan of the pups - he loves watching them and has started to reach for them if they're close by.  I love that our boys loves his dogs and that they love him!

Milestones: In C's sixth month, his biggest milestones were learning to sit up on his own, roll from belly to back and learn to hold his own bottle.  C continued to have a happy summer full of smiles and laughs and bringing so much joy to our lives!

The W Cousins at 3 Months

I'm not the only one who likes to see comparisons, right?!  Our sweet niece, M, had her 3 month pictures last week.  And I just couldn't help myself but to compare our nephew, N, along with C to see the resemblances and differences between the 3 cousins when they were each 3 months old.  Its crazy looking at C's 3 month shoot pictures, knowing Saturday we'll have his 6 month shoot!

These little ones haven't all played together yet, but that will be happening in September and I can not wait!  To see them all together and to document the whole thing!

First Trip to the Zoo

If you knew me B.C. (before C) you may have followed my very first blog, I Do at the Zoo.  If you found me through the infertility and baby blog trenches, you may not realize RCW and I have a thing for zoos.  We've been to entirely too many to count, even attemping to visit zoos while on our honeymoon in Europe!  One of our very first dates was to the National Zoo in D.C., and it just became our thing.  Which translated into getting married at The Louisville Zoo.  I have been so excited to take C to the Louisville Zoo for his first experience!  We decided to make it a family affair and waited until my parents came to visit in early July.

This summer the Louisville Zoo has a dinosaur exhibit, first I love me some dinos and am hoping my boy will too when he gets older.  I've already pinned way too many things for his way in the future dino themed birthday party!

With Grandma and Grandpa B and the dino.
And so since I'm being so honest, my favorite animals are elephants and penguins.  Sadly, the penguin environment is being remolded, but the elephants were out!  We took a family picture with a baby elephant statue that hangs out by their exhibit.

In addition to getting married at the zoo, RCW and I bought a brick with our name and wedding date on it.  Of course we had to do some photo ops with it!

July 8, 2012
And almost 3 years earlier on our wedding day!

After all the zoo fun and checking out the animals, we had one more stop to make.  The carousel!  Carter took his first ride and yet again it resembled our wedding day!

We had so much fun showing Carter the zoo, especially since it holds so many memories for RCW and I. Luckily, we're members and can't wait to go back, when perhaps it isn't 100+ degrees!

First Haircut (by Daddy)

Back in June I began to beg RCW to cut C's hair.  Look at the post about his first spoon fed bites of food, he had some long pieces of hair left over from his thick head of newborn hair, but that was it.  At times it looked like our little man was sporting a comb over!  RCW agreed, but said since my parents were coming to visit over July 4, we would let them see his long hair and then cut it.  So with Grandma's help, C had his first little hair cut!

That plate you see holding hair, well, yea, I saved his hair.  Yup.  That was another reason for the cut, I wanted to save his newborn hair with his umbilical cord stump.  Both are now safe in a little acrylic box.  I know I'm not the only momma who has saved those things!

After all those little snips to cut off his long hair, our little man was left looking like a little man with a buzzcut! It has continued to grow, but is definitely not long.  He is just sporting some peach fuzz.  It is crazy to me to think that he was born with a head full of jet black hair and now this is all that's left!  The mysteries of the baby world.
